The word Xiphactinus comes from the Greek and Latin words "Sword - Ray". This primitive fish is one of the largest known fossil fishes. It was an agressive predator in the ancient ocean and it grew to a length of 4.5-6m.

 

It lived in Late Cretaceous period

 

Age: 82 million years old.

 

Found in Niobrara Formation, Smoky Hill Chalk, Western Kansas - USA
